A Newport, RI Narrative-Ceramics Studio

Wanderlust Ceramics is a ceramics studio in Newport, Rhode Island, founded by Craig Crawford in 2006 where handmade, one-of-a-kind ceramics for the table and home: bowls, plates, platters, serving and small dishes, ceramic mosaics, and electrified wall sconces are produced.

What makes our ceramics different.

Most handmade pottery is about the form and the glaze. Ours is about the image. We work in the tradition of narrative and figurative ceramics — pieces that carry pictures, characters, and a point of view. Each one begins with imagery drawn from antique etchings and engravings, which is silkscreened onto a handmade ceramic surface, then hand-painted and glazed. The effect is old-world and irreverent at once: a 19th-century engraving, rescued and given a new, slightly subversive life on a dinner plate.

If you've searched for ceramic art in the spirit of Grayson Perry or George Ohr and come up short, this is the studio you were looking for.

The artists who set the table for us.

Bernard Palissy

(French, 1510–1590) — the Renaissance master of rustic ware, who cast life directly into ceramic and made the surface tell a story. Our love of detailed, antiquarian imagery starts here.

George Ohr

(American, 1857–1918) — the “Mad Potter of Biloxi,” who insisted that no two pieces should ever be alike.

Grayson Perry

(British, b. 1960) — who proved that a beautifully made pot can be funny, political, and provocative all at once. That’s exactly the line we like to walk.
